OYSI FLAT Setup: Check Your Soulplates

With 72mm outer wheels, the first thing to check is compatibility with your boots.

Depending on the skate model, you may need to slightly modify the soulplates to create enough clearance for the larger wheels.

On some USD and Seba boots, we directly shaped a rounded section into the soulplate. On other boots, including Gawds, Razors and Roces, we simply removed a few millimeters of material.

Once the clearance is sorted, install the frames using the mounting axles supplied by OYSI. These are important to achieve the correct setup and prevent the wheels from rubbing against the boot.

Install the 60mm middle wheels first, followed by the 72mm outer wheels.

The frame is extremely rigid, so installing the middle wheels can require a little extra pressure.

Then comes the moment of truth: put the skates on and hope you removed enough material from the soulplates! ?

First Impressions: Surprisingly Low

Once you're on your feet, the first impression is surprising.

Despite the 72mm wheels, the setup doesn't feel particularly tall. The overall feeling is much closer to skating a 60mm setup.

The real difference is the overall length.

On a size 42 boot, the outer wheels extend noticeably beyond the front and rear of the boot. That additional length quickly translates into extra stability and control, while the FLAT setup still provides plenty of maneuverability.

After just a few minutes, the setup feels surprisingly natural.

A H-block Made for Grinding

This is probably one of the biggest strengths of the OYSI design.

The H-block is low and very wide, making it easy to find the groove and lock into grinds without constantly searching for the right position.

Royales, torques and other grinds feel secure and predictable.

Soul grinds also work extremely well. The frame stays relatively low and the groove is easy to find after only a few attempts.

For topsides, however, you'll need to adjust your technique. The larger wheels are more likely to contact the obstacle, so you need to commit a little more and use your knees and ankles to create enough clearance.

Excellent Grind Performance

When it comes to sliding, the OYSI frame performs extremely well.

The OYSI frame glides smoothly across a wide range of surfaces and spots.

The large H-block and rigid construction provide a predictable and fluid grind, whether you're skating metal, concrete or more technical obstacles.

Our Verdict

With its big-wheel possibilities, massive H-block and FLAT configuration, the OYSI frame offers a genuinely different approach to aggressive skating.

You get more speed and stability while keeping excellent grinding performance.

The main thing to consider with the 72/60mm setup is soulplate clearance, as some boots may require minor modifications.

2020 EDIT: OYSI Medium

Since then, OYSI has expanded the range with the OYSI Medium frames.

The concept remains the same: FLAT setup, large H-block and strong grind performance, but with smaller wheel sizes.

The result is a more responsive and maneuverable setup, while also making installation much easier since the smaller wheels generally eliminate the need to modify your soulplates.

OYSI continues to offer a different way of approaching aggressive FLAT skating: more speed, more wheel options and a frame designed to grind hard.
