Bellegarde to Beaucaire Roller Trail – Gard (30)

The Bellegarde to Beaucaire Roller Greenway is a great route for discovering the Gard region of southern France on skates. This section of the ViaRhôna connects the two towns while following the Rhône à Sète Canal.

The ViaRhôna continues beyond this section toward Tarascon and Saint-Gilles, but some of those sections use shared roads. This guide focuses specifically on the paved and secured section between Bellegarde and Beaucaire.

Starting in Bellegarde

The recommended starting point is the port of Bellegarde. There is a small free parking area as well as a camper van area, and the paved section of the greenway starts right nearby.

The atmosphere is peaceful, with boats in the harbor and plenty of open space. Once you pass underneath the harbor bridge, you quickly reach a smooth, well-maintained paved surface.

The greenway then heads straight through fields and countryside. There are very few buildings around, making this a particularly peaceful section for roller skating.

Heading toward Beaucaire

The trail follows the Rhône à Sète Canal for a long, straight stretch. If you're lucky, you'll see boats navigating the canal — and of course, you can give them a friendly skater's hello!

After approximately 5 km, you reach a lock. The trail runs right alongside it, allowing you to watch how the lock operates. With a little luck, you may even see a boat passing through.

Continue along the greenway and you'll pass through a typical southern French landscape, including horses and bulls along the way.

Around 5 km later, you reach a bridge. This is essentially the only small climb on the route, and it is simply required to cross the bridge and switch sides of the canal. It is nothing particularly difficult on skates.

From there, you have approximately 2.5 km left to reach the port of Beaucaire.

You will pass alongside the large Beaucaire cement plant, which is easily visible from a distance, before reaching a particularly narrow section underneath a bridge.

⚠️ Pay attention here: the passage is very narrow. Slow down and make yourself visible before entering to avoid a difficult encounter with another skater or cyclist coming from the opposite direction.

Once you reach the port of Beaucaire, you can continue a little farther toward the town center and the main harbor. You'll find cafés and a bakery, making it a convenient place for a break before heading back toward Bellegarde.

Summary

The Bellegarde to Beaucaire Roller Greenway is an excellent easy skating route for discovering the Gard region.

With 12.5 km each way, the complete round trip is approximately 25 km and is accessible to a wide range of skating levels.

The route is mostly flat, straight, smooth and well maintained, with very few technical difficulties. Distance signs at both ends of the greenway also make it easy to keep track of your progress.

Several rest areas with benches are available along the route.

Starting from Bellegarde is particularly convenient thanks to the free and easy parking.

The main downside is the lack of trash cans along the route, so please take your waste with you.
